About Latin Quarter

Paris's ancient student district around the Sorbonne, where Latin was spoken in the Middle Ages, home to buzzing cafés, bookshops, the Panthéon and the oldest street in Paris.

The Latin Quarter, Quartier Latin, is the intellectual heart of Paris, the university quarter that has educated generations of scholars, thinkers, philosophers, and revolutionaries since the 12th century. Its name derives from the medieval practice of conducting all university instruction in Latin, the language of scholarship, until the Revolution abolished it. Centred on the Sorbonne University (founded 1257) and flanked by the Grandes Écoles, it remains the densest concentration of educational institutions in France.

The neighbourhood is one of the most atmospheric in Paris: a web of narrow streets and bookshops along the Boulevard Saint-Michel and Rue Saint-Jacques, the ancient Roman road now lined with cafés and crêperies. The Rue Mouffetard market, in continuous use since Roman times, remains one of the finest outdoor markets in Paris. The Panthéon dominates the hilltop. The Arènes de Lutèce, a 2nd-century Roman amphitheatre, survives in a garden. And the Shakespeare and Company bookshop, the legendary anglophone literary institution, sits on the quai across from Notre-Dame.

Did you know? The Latin Quarter gets its name from the medieval practice of conducting all university instruction in Latin, students and professors spoke Latin in these streets until the Revolution abolished it in 1793.
