About Palermo Cathedral
A magnificent Norman-Arab-Byzantine cathedral built in 1185, housing the royal tombs of Frederick II and Roger II of Sicily.
Palermo Cathedral is one of the most extraordinary architectural monuments in the Mediterranean world, a building that wears the history of Sicily on its very stones. Founded in 1185 by Archbishop Walter of the Mill on the site of an earlier mosque, which had itself been converted from a Byzantine church, the cathedral embodies the unique Norman-Arab-Byzantine synthesis that defined Palermo at its medieval zenith. Its exterior is a feast of architectural styles: Norman towers rise beside Arab-influenced geometric decoration, Gothic porches were added in later centuries, and a neoclassical dome was controversially added in the 18th century. The royal tombs inside are among the most important in Europe, containing the porphyry sarcophagi of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, Roger II, and Constance of Aragon.
Did you know? The cathedral contains Arabic Quranic inscriptions on columns incorporated from the earlier mosque, the Normans absorbed rather than destroyed the building they replaced.
