About Lama di Orte Beach
One of the most popular sandy beaches near Monopoli, a long stretch of golden sand and clear shallow water 2km south of the old town, accessible by bicycle or a short drive. The beach is backed by Mediterranean macchia scrubland and the Apulian coastal pines, offering a less developed and more natural alternative to the crowded beaches of the tourist resorts.
Lama di Orte is a sandy beach approximately 2km south of Monopoli's historic centre, accessible by bicycle path or by car along the coastal road. The beach is one of the most popular swimming destinations in the Monopoli area, offering a long stretch of golden sand, shallow clear water, and a less developed and commercialised atmosphere than the resort beaches further north. The beach takes its name from the lama (ravine) of Orte, a coastal ravine that drains onto the beach through a gap in the dunes. The coastal vegetation behind the beach, pine trees and Mediterranean macchia scrubland, provides natural shade and contributes to the beach's relatively undeveloped character. The water quality is consistently rated among the best on the Apulian coast, European Blue Flag status is awarded regularly, due to the absence of major urban pollution sources and the excellent tidal flushing of the clear Adriatic water. Several stabilimenti balneari (beach establishments) provide sunbed and umbrella hire, food and drink service, and basic facilities.
Did you know? The Blue Flag award, administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education, is one of the world's most recognised eco-labels for beaches and marinas. To receive a Blue Flag, a beach must meet stringent criteria in four categories: water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and services. Puglia consistently has more Blue Flag beaches than most other Italian regions, reflecting the quality of the Adriatic water along its coast.
