About Monaco Ville / Le Rocher (The Rock)

Monaco Ville, the original medieval old town on the Rock of Monaco, is a dense cluster of narrow streets, the Prince's Palace, Monaco Cathedral, the Oceanographic Museum, and all of Monaco's oldest history, perched on a promontory 60 metres above the sea.

Monaco Ville, universally known as Le Rocher, 'The Rock', is the original Monaco: a medieval promontory town built on the rock that juts into the Mediterranean, connected to the rest of the principality by road to the west and north. The Rock rises about 60 metres above sea level and measures approximately 800 metres long by 300 metres wide, small even by the standards of a principality 2 square kilometres in area. Yet within this compact space are some of Monaco's most important sites: the Prince's Palace at the western tip, the Cathedral about halfway along the south side, the Oceanographic Museum at the eastern cliff edge, a dense network of narrow streets with souvenir shops, restaurants, and the residences of some of Monaco's permanent population, and at the northernmost point, the Government buildings of the principality, the Palais du Gouvernement. Monaco Ville is the quietest and most atmospheric part of Monaco, far from the casino and the supercars, its stone streets and small squares have a village character that the rest of Monaco completely lacks.

Did you know? Monaco Ville is technically the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Monaco, archaeological evidence suggests human habitation on the Rock from at least the Bronze Age, though the medieval town as it exists today was largely developed after the Grimaldi takeover in 1297.
