About Grace Kelly: Princess of Monaco

Grace Kelly, Philadelphia-born Hollywood actress, Academy Award winner, and Alfred Hitchcock's favourite lead, married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 in one of the most-watched events of the decade, becoming Princess Grace and transforming Monaco's international image and glamour.

Grace Patricia Kelly was born on 12 November 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jack Kelly, a wealthy contractor who had won three Olympic gold medals in rowing, and Margaret Majer, a German-American socialite. She attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and began modelling and acting before breaking into Hollywood films in the early 1950s. Her rise was rapid: she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Country Girl (1954), starred in three Alfred Hitchcock films, Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), and To Catch a Thief (1955), and appeared on the cover of Life magazine repeatedly. She was considered the most glamorous actress in Hollywood when, in May 1955, she met Prince Rainier III of Monaco at the Cannes Film Festival. Their relationship developed quickly, and they announced their engagement in January 1956. The wedding, held in Monaco Cathedral on 19 April 1956, was watched by over 30 million television viewers in Europe and was covered by 1,500 journalists from 58 countries. She retired from acting at 26 and died on 14 September 1982, the day after a car accident on the Corniche road above Monaco.

Did you know? Grace Kelly is one of very few people in history to have achieved the highest recognition in both the film world and European royalty. Her Oscar for The Country Girl (1954) was awarded just two years before her marriage to Prince Rainier, making her the only Oscar-winning actress to become a reigning European princess.
