About Maserati: the Trident of Modena

Maserati was founded in Bologna in 1914 by six brothers, but moved to Modena in 1937 and has been associated with the city ever since. The trident logo is taken from the Neptune fountain in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore.

Maserati was founded in Bologna on December 1, 1914 by the six Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, Ernesto, and Mario, who began as mechanics and racing car builders. The trident logo, which remains one of the most recognisable automotive symbols in the world, was taken from the statue of Neptune (Poseidon) in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore, designed by his brother Mario, who was an artist. In 1937, following financial difficulties, the company was sold to the Orsi family and moved from Bologna to Modena. For the following decades, Modena was the centre of Maserati production, with the factory and headquarters on Viale Ciro Menotti. During the 1950s and 1960s, Maserati produced some of the greatest racing cars and Grand Prix winners in history. Today, while production has moved to other facilities, Maserati's spiritual and administrative headquarters remains in Modena, and the company is considered a central part of the Motor Valley heritage that also includes Ferrari (Maranello), Lamborghini (Sant'Agata Bolognese), Pagani (San Cesario sul Panaro), and Ducati (Bologna).

Did you know? The Maserati trident logo was designed by Mario Maserati, who was an artist, and is based on the Neptune statue in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore, the same fountain that greets visitors to Bologna today.
