About National Gallery

One of the world's great art museums, housing over 2,300 Western European paintings from the 13th to the 20th century, free to enter.

The National Gallery, commanding the north side of Trafalgar Square, houses one of the world's finest collections of Western European painting. Founded in 1824 when Parliament purchased 38 paintings from the estate of banker John Julius Angerstein, the collection now numbers over 2,300 works spanning seven centuries.

Masterpieces include Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait, Leonardo da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks, Velázquez's Rokeby Venus, Van Gogh's Sunflowers, and Monet's Water-Lilies. Every major movement in Western art is represented.

Admission is free, continuing the founding principle that great art should be accessible to everyone regardless of wealth or status.

Did you know? The collection started with just 38 paintings purchased by Parliament in 1824 and has grown to over 2,300 works.
