About Millennium Bridge

A sleek steel pedestrian bridge linking St Paul's Cathedral to Tate Modern, famously nicknamed the "Wobbly Bridge" after swaying on opening day.

The Millennium Bridge is a stunning steel suspension footbridge spanning the Thames between St Paul's Cathedral and Tate Modern. Designed by architect Sir Norman Foster, sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, and engineering firm Arup, it opened on 10 June 2000.

On its opening day, the bridge began to sway alarmingly when up to 90,000 people crossed it, earning it the nickname "the Wobbly Bridge." It was closed after just two days and fitted with dampers to prevent the lateral swaying. It reopened in 2002 and has been steady ever since.

The bridge offers one of London's finest photographic views, a perfectly framed vista of St Paul's Cathedral dome from the south bank. The bridge also featured prominently in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where it is destroyed by Death Eaters.
