About St Stephen's Green
A beloved 22-acre Victorian park in the heart of Dublin, flanked by Georgian architecture and with deep associations with the 1916 Easter Rising.
St Stephen's Green is one of Dublin's most beloved public spaces, a 22-acre Victorian park in the very centre of the city, opened to the public in 1880 after centuries as a common grazing land and later a private park for the surrounding Georgian houses. The park was laid out in its current form thanks to the generosity of Arthur Guinness, 1st Baron Ardilaun, who purchased it from the city and funded its landscaping before gifting it back as a public park.
The park contains ornamental lakes, a bandstand, a Victorian rockery, a garden for the visually impaired (with plants specifically chosen for their scent and texture), and memorials to a remarkable cast of Irish historical figures including Wolfe Tone, James Joyce, and Countess Constance Markievicz.
During the Easter Rising of 1916, the park was occupied by a contingent of Irish Volunteers under Countess Markievicz, who used its shrubberies for sniping. The British commander, chivalrously, allowed the park-keeper to continue feeding the ducks throughout the Rising, a famous Dublin story.
Did you know? During the 1916 Easter Rising, fighting raged around St Stephen's Green, but both sides agreed to a ceasefire each morning to allow the park keeper to feed his ducks.
