About Merrion Square
Dublin's finest Georgian square, known for its colourful doors, the Oscar Wilde statue, and associations with W.B. Yeats, Daniel O'Connell, and many other Irish notables.
Merrion Square is widely considered the finest intact Georgian square in Dublin and arguably in all of Ireland. Laid out between 1762 and 1764 and developed over the following decades, it represents the peak of Dublin's Georgian urban planning, four terraces of red-brick townhouses with elaborate doorways, flanking a beautifully maintained 8.5-acre public park.
The square's residents have included some of the most famous figures in Irish cultural and political history. Daniel O'Connell, the Catholic Emancipation leader, lived at No.58. W.B. Yeats, the Nobel Prize-winning poet, lived at No.82 in the 1920s. Oscar Wilde spent his childhood at No.1 Merrion Square (his parents' home). The square's most beloved feature today is the reclining statue of Oscar Wilde by sculptor Danny Osborne, unveiled in 1997, which depicts the playwright lounging on a rock with characteristic wit and elegance.
The park at the centre of the square, once private, was donated to Dublin Corporation by the Archbishop of Dublin in 1974. On summer Sundays, the railings along the park's edge are hung with paintings by local artists in a tradition going back decades.
Did you know? Oscar Wilde's childhood home was at No.1 Merrion Square, and his witty lounging statue in the park corner is one of Dublin's most beloved landmarks.
