About Cologne Cathedral
The towering twin-spired Gothic cathedral that defines Cologne's skyline, begun in 1248, finished in 1880, and home to the golden Shrine of the Three Kings.
Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is the most visited landmark in Germany and one of the supreme achievements of Gothic architecture. Its foundation stone was laid in 1248 to house the relics of the Three Kings, the Magi, but the money and the will to finish it ran out, and for centuries the half-built cathedral stood with a medieval crane frozen on its south tower. Only in the 19th century, fired by Romantic nationalism, was the work resumed using the surviving medieval plans, and the cathedral was finally completed in 1880, 632 years after it began. At 157 metres, its twin spires made it the tallest building in the world for four years. It miraculously survived the bombing that flattened most of the city in the Second World War, and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Did you know? Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to build (1248-1880); for centuries it stood half-finished with a medieval crane left on its unfinished south tower.
