About Teatro Massimo Bellini
Catania's magnificent opera house opened in 1890, named after its native son Vincenzo Bellini, one of the greatest composers of the bel canto tradition.
The Teatro Massimo Bellini opened on 31 May 1890 with a performance of Bellini's own Norma, an appropriate tribute to the composer after whom it is named. Vincenzo Bellini was born in Catania in 1801 and went on to become one of the supreme operatic composers of the 19th century, whose melodic genius in works like Norma, La Sonnambula, and I Puritani defined the bel canto style and influenced composers from Wagner to Chopin. The theatre is a splendid example of late 19th-century Italian opera house architecture, with a facade featuring terracotta reliefs of scenes from Bellini's operas and an interior whose four tiers of boxes and ceiling painting of scenes from Bellini's works create one of the most beautiful operatic spaces in the south of Italy.
Did you know? Bellini wrote Norma and La Sonnambula in the same year (1831), two masterpieces in twelve months. Both became instant international sensations performed in opera houses across Europe.
