About Catania Cathedral

Catania's Baroque cathedral, dedicated to patron saint Sant'Agata, housing her relic treasure and filled with extraordinary civic devotion during the February festival.

Catania Cathedral, the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, is both the religious and civic centre of the city, dedicated to Catania's patron saint, a young Christian woman martyred in Catania in 251 AD during the persecution of Emperor Decius. The cathedral was first built by the Normans in 1078–1093, then completely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in the Baroque style supervised by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Its white marble Baroque facade dominates the east side of Piazza del Duomo, while the interior contains the relics of Sant'Agata, including her veil and her bones, housed in an extraordinary golden reliquary bust. The Festival of Sant'Agata (3–5 February) is one of the largest religious festivals in Italy: hundreds of thousands of devotees in white robes and black caps carry the saint's silver fercolo (processional float) through the city streets for three consecutive nights.

Did you know? The Festival of Sant'Agata (3–5 February) is the third largest Catholic festival in the world by attendance, drawing over a million devotees to Catania each year.
