About Gardens of Augustus

Terraced gardens laid out by the industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the early 20th century and renamed for Emperor Augustus in 1918, with bougainvillea, roses, and Mediterranean flowers cascading down the cliff above Via Krupp, offering the most photographed view of Via Krupp's zigzag path and the Faraglioni rocks.

The Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto) were created by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the early 20th century, originally known as the Krupp Gardens, they were renamed in honour of the Emperor Augustus in 1918 and donated to the municipality of Capri. The gardens occupy a series of terraces on the southern cliff of Capri town, descending from the level of the Via Matermania to the edge of the cliff above Via Krupp. The planting includes roses, bougainvillea, carnations, and a variety of Mediterranean flowering plants, creating a vivid display of colour from spring through autumn. The great attraction of the gardens, however, is not the flowers but the view: from the terraces you look down at Via Krupp, the spectacular zigzag path cut into the cliff face by the industrialist Friedrich Krupp in 1902, and beyond it at the Faraglioni, the three rock stacks that are the most iconic natural feature of Capri. This view, the zigzag path, the vivid blue of the water, the Faraglioni in the distance, is among the most reproduced images of the entire Italian coastline. The gardens are small and can be visited in 30-45 minutes; the combination of the flowers, the view, and the relatively modest entrance fee makes them among the best value attractions on Capri.

Did you know? Friedrich Alfred Krupp (1854-1902), who built the Via Krupp and developed Capri's southern cliff face, was the head of the Krupp steel dynasty, the largest private company in Germany and the main supplier of armaments to the German military. He spent his last years on Capri, where he reportedly enjoyed the freedom from German social constraints; his death in 1902 was surrounded by scandal and may have been suicide.
