About Belvedere di Tragara
The finest cliff walk on Capri, Via Tragara leads from the Piazzetta through the residential villas of the island's most exclusive residential quarter to this clifftop belvedere directly above the Faraglioni, the best photography point on the island.
Via Tragara is the finest residential and scenic walk on Capri, beginning at the Piazzetta and leading southeast through the most exclusive residential district of the island to the Belvedere di Tragara, a clifftop platform directly above the Faraglioni rocks. The walk is approximately 20 minutes on a level, paved path through a district of extraordinary villas set in lemon and orange gardens, some of the finest private houses in the Bay of Naples. The path was the former estate road of the Krupp family and the various wealthy foreign residents who colonised this part of the island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; several of the villas along the route are architecturally remarkable. The Belvedere di Tragara at the end of the walk is a simple concrete viewpoint platform above the sea, providing the most dramatic and closest view of the Faraglioni, the three rocks are barely 200 metres away and their full height and form is visible from here. This is the definitive Faraglioni photography point. The walk can be extended from the Belvedere to the Natural Arch and the Grotta di Matermania, adding another 45 minutes of cliff path.
Did you know? The Hotel Punta Tragara, on Via Tragara just before the Belvedere, was originally a private villa designed by Le Corbusier for the Lombard engineer Emilio Vismara in 1920. During the Second World War it served as a headquarters for the American command and hosted figures including General Eisenhower and Winston Churchill, and it opened as a hotel in 1973. It is now one of the most exclusive small hotels on Capri.
