About Senate House
The elegant Palladian building where Cambridge University degree ceremonies have been held since 1730.
Senate House is the ceremonial heart of the University of Cambridge, built between 1722 and 1730 by James Gibbs in the Palladian style. It is used for degree ceremonies, known as "General Admission," and for meetings of the university's governing body. The building's Portland stone exterior and elegant proportions make it one of the finest 18th-century buildings in Cambridge.
Did you know? Every Cambridge degree since 1730 has been conferred in Senate House, the ceremony is still conducted entirely in Latin.
