About Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux

A magnificent neoclassical opera house built in 1780, considered so perfect that it inspired the design of the Paris Opéra Garnier.

The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, and it is almost miraculous that it has survived largely intact since its completion in 1780. Designed by Victor Louis, the theatre's spectacular portico features twelve Corinthian columns crowned by statues of the nine Muses and three goddesses, Juno, Venus, and Minerva. The interior grand staircase was so admired that Charles Garnier studied it extensively before designing the famous Paris Opéra in 1875. With seating for over 1,100 and magnificent ceiling paintings, the theatre remains the cultural heart of Bordeaux, hosting opera, ballet, and symphony concerts. It stands on the ancient site of a Roman temple and the medieval Château Trompette.

Did you know? Charles Garnier specifically travelled to Bordeaux to study the Grand Théâtre's interior staircase before designing the Paris Opéra, which opened 95 years later.
