About Trullo Sovrano

The only two-storey trullo in existence, a monumental building from the late 18th century that served as the home of a local priest and now operates as a museum showing the domestic life of Alberobello's inhabitants.

The Trullo Sovrano, the Sovereign Trullo, is the largest and most remarkable individual trullo building in Alberobello, and it is unique in being the only trullo in the world to have two full storeys. It was built in the late 18th century for the wealthy family of a local priest named Cataldo Perta, who used it as his home. The building is extraordinary both for its scale, it is significantly larger than the typical single-family trullo, and for the technical achievement of constructing a second floor within the trullo system, which normally produces single-storey buildings. The Trullo Sovrano is now a museum that has been furnished to show how trullo interiors appeared in the early twentieth century, with period furnishings, domestic equipment, and explanatory displays about trullo construction techniques.

Did you know? The Trullo Sovrano was built in the late 18th century as the home of the local priest Cataldo Perta, and it is also the first trullo known to have been built with mortar rather than in the pure dry-stone technique of the older trulli.
